- Well, I wasn't expecting to be able to watch the Apple WWDC keynote today, but circumstances have allowed me to do so. #
- Macs#
- Right now, Apple is announcing the Macs based on iterations of their M2 chip, including new Mac Studio and Mac Pro. The Pro with an M2 Ultra has 24-cores compute and 76 GPU cores. The Pros cost $6999, definitely a Pro cost, but available to preorder today. New 15-inch Macbook Air.#
- iOS 17 / iPhone#
- Live Voicemail, which is the same as Google Call Screening.#
- Facetime "voice mail" equivalent if someone is not there to receive your call#
- Few references to "on device machine learning"#
- Announced their own version of Google Memories called Journal. Preserve rich and powerful memories, and practice gratitude!#
- Standby/dashboard view when you put your phone down in landscape. Appears to be triggered by a stand. #
- iPadOS 17 / iPad#
- Widgets and lock screen. Widgets are interactive. Bringing the iOS lock screen styles to iPad. Includes live activity. #
- Health coming to iPad. If memory services, this is centered around iWatch. #
- Integrated PDF support can automate PDF forms. #
- macOS / Macs#
- Name = Sonoma#
- Screen savers#
- Add widgets to the desktop. Fade in to the background when you open an app, and related to the wallpaper. Shortcut widgets. #
- Password and passkey sharing in Safari. Of course that requires using the password manager feature of browsers, which I am not sold on.#
- Something like PWA, web apps support in Safari#
- Moved in to the second hour....#
- Airpods#
- Fasting switching between Apple devices.#
- External / ambient sound function so that you can keep wearing the Airpods when someone talks with you.#
- tvOS / Apple TV#
- Control center redesign. #
- Facetime wirelessly connects to iPhone / iPad, so you see the other person on the TV. Interact with gestures. Shareplay integration. Support for Zoom and WebEx coming to Apple TV. #
- watchOS / Apple Watch#
- Snoopy and Woodstock watch face, with animations.#
- One more thing.... Augmented Reality (AR)#
- Ski goggle look. Seems to me this is the ultimate test of the cult of Apple. Will you start seeing people all around wearing these googles? #
- Name = Vision Pro; operating system called visionOS.#
- Doesn't look wireless. I see a wire coming down the back. USB-C? #
- Spacial computing. (Of course, Apple has to claim creation of a computing type.)#
- Pushing productivity, which Microsoft attempted with Hololens. #
- Environments is VR-like, adjustable with a crown. #
- Uses eyes, hands and voice for input. Some type of wrist sensor to use your fingers to click. #
- What is the field of view? Is it going to be as large as being shown during this demo. #
- Will Apple sell branded nausea bags? Cost $10 per bag. #
- Wireless pick up the Macbook display. #
- Question... Apple mythology states they enter a market when they have a better take on it. In what way is Vision Pro a better take on prior AR / VR solutions? Definitely not with the hardware, looks like Apple is putting all their eggs in the software basket, which is interesting for a hardware company. #
- How does something like this work for people who wear glasses? #
- Got Disney to produce content. This feels like a hard sell, all teasers to get people thinking about why they would want Vision Pro. #
- Another guy with a British accent to tell us about the specs o Vision Pro....#
- External battery gives two hours of life. Separate from the goggles to save weight, connects via cable. How much will Apple charge for batteries? $99? #
- 4K video per eye with special lenses. Micro OLED?#
- Special chip, called R1. Real time sensor processing. #
- Press told to plan sticking around another day. We will see articles tomorrow about how real this all is. #
- Iris reading for security and encryption, calling it Optic ID.#
- I'll admit this has all the tech inside one expects from Apple, but the industrial design is not revolutionary thus is going to share constraints with other devices like HoloLens. Seems like Apple is really hoping all of the software features will enable people to overcome the constraints. #
- Costs $3499, shipping early next year. When will developer kits ship? Nothing stated during the preso, but perhaps there will be answers over the next few days. Bet Dev Kits become available in the fall. #
- Crossing over the second hour....#
- Tim claims Vision Pro is a revolutionary product. Creating a new spatial computing platform. It does present a ton of new things for developers, but is there enough for consumers to want to buy. #
