Notes from a retired newspaper publisher

  • Since @ElonMusk bought @X/@Twitter, it became more useful as some individual posters sorted through noise to aggregate #news, #opinion, & insight. Community Notes are useful, but it is not X’s duty to validate or invalidate everything. #
  • Like Price Discovery in Economics, information is better as it gets weighed by others. People previously paid commercial media to perform that function, but journalism at the national level has been unreliable.#
  • Misdirection by media, schools, higher education, and politics warps discussion. Although they have views, independent aggregators can gain trust as they offer pointers to useful information, organize it, and expose bogus arguments.#
  • The goal is not to assert truth, because that is beyond what one can know, but, as philosopher Karl Popper said, we can prune away what is demonstrably false.#
  • Readers have to be the last line of their own defense. As a retired owner/editor of a family-owned daily newspaper, I put together one regular aggregator of tweets: https://theviewfromafar.com/sbwaters@rnymedia.com/ #
