- The most frequently used letters in English are sometimes said to be these, in this order:#
- ETAON RISHD LFCMU GYPWB VKJXZQ #
- If you use words made up of the letters on the left and then center of that list, you'll have a good chance of knowing most of the letters in the day's Wordle solution. #
- If your first two guesses are OATEN and BRUSH, you'll know whether ten of the most common letters are in today's solution.#
- If you continue with CLAIM, you'll now about fourteen of the most common letters. Continue with WOODY or GOODY or FOODY and you'll have covered 17 of the most commonly-used letters in English.#
- And you'll have some clues about where some of those letters do and do not appear in the solution.#
- Today, for example, OATEN reveals that there is an E in the fourth position and an A but not in the second or fourth positions. BRUSH reveals that there is a B but not in the first position. #
- CLAIM reveals that the A is also NOT in the third position. Native speakers of English know that it's not very likely that the A is in the final position, so it's very likely in the first position. #
- WOODY or FOODY or GOODY reveals that the puzzle solution ends in Y. The A therefore must be in the first position.#
- So now we know that the answer is either AB()EY or A()BEY. Likely from this point we'd quickly guess ABBEY, and we'd be correct.#
- We could also just run through the alphabet one letter at a time and rule out the rest.#
- So: tomorrow, I'll enter OATEN, then BRUSH, then CLAIM, then WOODY or FOODY or GOODY and see if I can solve in the two remaining steps.#
- PS. It doesn't look like this strategy would work in Hard Mode.#
- PPS. OATEN, BRUSH, FILMY, and DRECK will tell you something about the presence and position of 18 of the most frequently appearing letters in the language.#
