Album of the Day: Blur - Modern Life is Rubbish#
A decent bridge between Blur's debut and Parklife. Modern Life is the sound of the band in transition. They managed to ditch the baggy sound they had been lumped in with, and started to develop as songwriters. The comparisons with The Kinks are obvious, both in subject matter and style. The singles of course stand out. For Tomorrow, Chemical World and Sunday Sunday are Student Indie Disco defined. A great album to drink pints of cherry brandy and cider to.

I had a school hosting bill to settle first thing on Tuesday morning. Having agreed contracts with various schools at the start of academic years, the hosting renewals all seem to come at the same time. The pace of the public sector means that I usually get reimbursed at the start of the spring term.

A trip to the local picture framer was on the To Do list for A. We've let our artwork (ha!) store up over the past few years. We've got a dozen or so paintings that need framing. One of these is the stunning lino cut that a rowing club member kindly donated to me after she used one of my on-board snaps as the inspiration.

I dipped in and out of the Surrey Vs Yorkshire stream all day. Micky Stewart was the guest for the morning session. He had some cracking Surrey stories to share from the 1950's Glory Years team.

A ridiculous quote for a new front door arrived. I can buy an electric bicycle cheaper than that, mate. Apparently it's all about the cost of wood. Dead wood, more like. We'll see...

I headed back down to South London early evening. It was an uneventful train journey. I listened to the Steve Jones podcast with Malcolm McLaren as a guest. It was an old recording, natch. It was difficult to judge who was telling the truth.

My front light failed me when I reached LS. Arse. London isn't exactly a pitch black city, but it's not ideal crossing the river with no front light. I also had a really odd Brompton moment at the other end. I forgot how to fold my bicycle. I was tired and wanted a hot drink. This all added to the general crapness and lack of coordination on my behalf.

I eventually managed it and made my way into the flat. I binged on the Obi Won series for the remainder of the evening.

Some more early dancehall from 1989. Don't Throw It All Away is on the flip for Rockers Don't Move You by Home T4. This has been rinsed out at parties over the years. Enjoy the crackles 🔥🔥
