- I’ve had a website in one form or another since 1994 or so, but I haven’t had a place for my own creative work in 20 years. And I’ve been doing a lot of thinking in the meantime.#
- You have to start somewhere, and sometimes things are a bit messy at first. I still do everything on my phone right now, but in the words of a beloved, missed, friend: It’s time to reinvent myself again. Dave Winer’s got a new take on how everything can all go together, and I’m on board.#
- Now I just need a computer. There’s no place to set up another iMac and I can’t use the company stuff, so that means laptop: Is $300 worth it for custom function keys or whatever those things are? Probably not. But better speakers? Yup.#
- Or, maybe I need a new iPad. It turns out, my original model iPad still powers up and plays games and physically is capable of performing a lot of things, if you go by bits processed per second, screenpainting, etc. I had it running an entire virtual tabletop in Safari a few years back. But it gets no software updates, so I can’t use it for anything useful. For me, useful is:#
- PDF reader, for#
- Manuals for all my dodgy test equipment I got off eBay#
- Scientific papers or anything else in PDF form for any topic I’ve ever been interested in#
- Sketchpad, for#
- Drawing cartoons#
- Making diagrams#
- Thinking#
- Distraction-free writing#
- Games, for the kiddo#
- OK, the Drummer UI has some issues on the phone—I don’t recommend it one bit. But any new computer I get won’t be here for a couple weeks, and the phone is right here in my hand, so let’s see what Drummer can do.#
